Charles Leclerc described his passing Sebastian Vettel in Bahrain as a "delicate situation". After all, getting out of his teammate would not have been a good decision.
Ferrari's rookie started Sunday's grand prix from pole, but lost to Vettel as he bogged down.
He was then dubbed by Valtteri Bottas.
But finding his feet and his pace, he first pursued the Mercedes driver, then his teammate in the lead, catching up after only a few laps.
While Leclerc initially followed Vettel, he used DRS to convince the German to lead his first grand prize.
"It's always a difficult situation to face your teammate, because the risks are very high and, as in each team, they warn you before the race: OK, you can try things on different people, but with your team- mate, please be careful – this is something normal, "Leclerc told F1i.com
"It's always obviously something more.
"I had the opportunity and I did not hesitate, I just sent for her. I was happy to have succeeded the first time I tried, especially after the bad start. So yes, happy with the way it ended. "
However, Leclerc may have dodge orders when Vettel passes.
Having caught his teammate, he told Ferrari "Guys, I'm faster," but he was told to stay on the job.
He did it, but only briefly.
"I just let them know," he explained.
"I think I got an answer: all right, stay that way for two laps, but then, I had the opportunity to get straight to the point, so I started and it was a successful pass, then I was faster. so I did my race. "
Unfortunately for Leclerc, it all ended in tears, because a late engine problem in the Grand Prix earned him to return to third place.
It was however his very first podium in F1.
