A women's fashion boutique that operates a store in Livingston County is closing.
Charming Charlie filed for Chapter 11 this week and announced plans to close its 261 stores in 38 states. Charming Charlie has six stores in Michigan, two locally at Green Oak Village Place Mall and Novi Town Center. The company had previously filed for bankruptcy in 2017 and had emerged in April 2018 after the closure of 100 stores. The company's CFO, Alvaro Bellon, said the brand "continued to face challenges that kept Charming Charlie from continuing." Exit sales of the company have already started and the company plans to leave its stores before August 31.
At the same time, analysts predict that more stores will close by the end of 2019 as part of what some are calling the "apocalypse of retail". Charming Charlie store closures are just the latest in retail and physical stores that continue to struggle with online competition and big box stores. Payless ShoeSource Russian Charlotte, Dressbarn, R 'Us Toys, Shopko, Gymboree, Claire's and David's Bridal have also announced their closure or bankruptcy this year. (JM)
