Free agent swingman Kelly Oubre Jr. has agreed with the Charlotte Hornets on a guaranteed two-year contract paying nearly $ 25 million, a source confirmed to The Undefeated’s Marc J. Spears.
News of the Obre deal was first reported by Yahoo Sports.
Oubre, 25, was one of the more intriguing independent agents in the array given his combination of talent, physical skill and age.
After struggling to find a rhythm early last season playing alongside new teammates Stephen Curry and Draymond Green on the Warriors, Oubre started seeing more results in February while shooting 43% at- beyond the arc and garnering praise from teammates and coaches for his defensive presence.
Oubre rebounded well from his slow start to end the year averaging 15.4 points and 6 rebounds per game. He suffered a wrist injury in the final month of the season, which kept him out of the Warriors’ bigger games.
Oubre made waves just after the trade deadline when he said he was not looking to leave the bench when asked about his future situation with the organization.
While Klay Thompson is expected to return early next season from an ACL injury, the Warriors have made it clear they want Oubre to return, but only if he’s comfortable playing on the bench, as he did it at the end of the season before his wrist injury.
“I can’t speak for the future, my brother,” Oubre said just after the deadline. “You keep asking me questions like I’m a psychic. But at the end of the day I’m growing up, honing my skills in this league and I can offer a lot more than stepping off the bench, so in the end after all, it’s my life. I can’t predict the future. Only God can. “
