If you have an Asus computer, you will want to check if your device is among those affected by the recent "Shadow Hammer" malware attack.

You have probably already seen some worrying headlines about the malware, but for those who are not aware, here is the agreement. A recent malware attack affected more than 57,000 Asus computers by leveraging the method used by Asus to deploy software updates on its products. This figure comes from a survey recently released by the online security company Kaspersky, who investigated the attack. The report examines exactly how the attack was conducted and why these methods sparked so much concern.

Kaspersky's report also includes a tool developed by the company to allow Asus owners to check if their device was among the people affected by the malware deployment. It only takes a few seconds to see if your device was targeted or not during the attack.

  1. Download "shadowhammercheck.zip" by clicking on the link "Download an archive with the tool" in the Kaspersky article on SecureList.
  2. Unzip the file to your preferred location
  3. Open the unzipped shadowhammercheck folder and run shadowhammer.exe.
  4. The program will perform the test on your PC and give you the results almost immediately.

Asus has also released a diagnostic tool that allows users to check if their computer is infected with malware. This tool works in the same way as the Kaspersky tool.

  1. Download "ASDT_v1.0.10.zip" from Asus
  2. Unzip the file
  3. Open the file and run "ASDT.exe"
  4. A dialog box will appear with the diagnosis

You can also use Kaspersky's online Shadowhammer tool to check if your system is listed in the target list, but you must know the MAC address of your computer.

  1. Open the terminal on the command line. press the Windows key + R, search for "cmd" and press Enter.
  2. At the command line, type "Ipconfig / all" and hit Enter
  3. You will receive several lines of information. Locate all the lines that say "Physical address:" then note the hexadecimal string strings that follow the physical address lines – these strings are your MAC addresses. You can see an example in the screen capture above.
  4. Copy each MAC address
  5. Then open the diagnostic page of Kaspersky Shadow Hammer and copy each MAC address into the search field, then click "Check now." Repeat for each MAC address.

If one of your MAC addresses seems positive to you, you must take steps to detect and eliminate malware. The first step is to equip yourself with a reliable antivirus program.

In fact, even if an application or website does not indicate that you are on the "target list", you can also run a full virus scan (just in case). Although there are many premium options of excellent quality, there are also many free and competent antivirus and antimalware programs, including Windows Defender, that can help you remove all traces of Shadow Hammer.

You will also want to update the Asus Live Update application to the most recent version (V3.6.8 or later), which closes the security vulnerability that allowed the exploitation of Shadow Hammer. Just like installing an antivirus / antimalware solution, this update is highly recommended, even for non-target users of Shadow Hammer.
