“My Rainey’s Black Bottom” star Viola Davis masterfully transforms into a legendary musician in a way that is both stunning and moving. But this transformation doesn’t just happen in her performance – it has also happened physically. And now she’s coming back to herself through hard work.

The Oscar winner gave considerable weight to the role, claiming during promotion at the Toronto International Film Festival that she “had nearly 200” pounds to perfect the role in the Netflix film, which was premiered today on Netflix. In a tweet on Thursday, Davis thanked her trainer Gabriela McLain for helping her get back into shape safely and healthily after filming was finished.

And, wow, this credit is well deserved.

On her Instagram, McLain – a celebrity trainer who worked with Davis – shared some details about her process, as well as more photos. Just watching them work together is motivation in itself.

“Good form helps you work more efficiently so that you can use your energy for the extra push rather than the unnecessary movements,” McLain wrote. “It’s quite simple. Get in shape, the better your results. “

For Davis, this is all part of the transformation that has helped her create a precise and authentic take on the character. It was important that she create a version of Ma Rainey that not only satisfies her but honors the singer’s memory.

“I wanted to create a character on my own terms. I didn’t want to filter it through white eyes or through any idea people would have of someone taller, Black, a singer, a woman, ”Davis told Entertainment Tonight in an interview. “Usually these characters are just big and funny. Tall, black and funny. I wanted more than that. I wanted autonomy.
