(CNN) – An environmental advocacy group claims that several popular foods for breakfast contain the main ingredient in Roundup weed killer.
Cheerios and Nature Valley products are among the 21 foods cited in the Environmental Working Group Report, cited as containing traces of glyphosate.
There is a divergence of opinion on the safety of glyphosate among the monitoring agencies. The US Environmental Protection Agency said it was not a carcinogen in April, but the UN's World Health Organization said in 2015 that it is "probably carcinogenic to humans".
Last month, a California jury sentenced Roundup's maker, Monsanto, to pay a couple more than $ 2 billion to treat their cancer after prolonged exposure to the product.
General Mills, which manufactures Cheerios, admits that pesticide residues can enter its products.

An analysis from the University of Washington published in February revealed that glyphosate could increase cancer risk by 41%, CNN reported. This research focused on people who are highly exposed to the chemical, such as field guards.
