Cheese Curds, 10/6: Packers should call Stephon Gilmore with injured Alexander

It’s rare for an All-Pro player to become a free agent in the middle of an NFL season. Even rarer is the situation where this player can apparently still play at a high level. And most unlikely is when that player comes into the market for a position where your team is in dire need of help.

That’s the position the Green Bay Packers find themselves in on Wednesday morning. In a shocking move, the New England Patriots release cornerback Stephon Gilmore, who has made three consecutive Pro Bowls and won first-team All-Pro honors in 2018 and 2019:

Gilmore had to be off for an additional two weeks due to injury before becoming eligible to return to the pitch, but he’s now suddenly a free agent deal. The move is obviously, at least in part, driven by the fact that Gilmore is in the final year of his contract, as the 31-year-old was set to earn a maximum of $ 7.5 million this season. Compensation would probably be the Packers’ biggest stumbling block to bringing Gilmore; they provide a great opportunity for a ring, but Gilmore will almost certainly cost a hefty price tag.

The Packers of course face significant uncertainty in their cornerback room following Jaire Alexander’s shoulder injury on Sunday. The team and Alexander are reportedly still weighing their options, with an update expected on Wednesday. But with Gilmore in the market, the Packers could make a dazzling move to fill that void, and they should be one of the first teams to make a phone call:
