Chef David Chang became the first celebrity to win the US edition of the Who Wants to Be a Millionaire? – and he donated the $ 1 million top prize to restaurateurs affected by the coronavirus pandemic.

For his last question, Chang was asked to name the first US president to have electricity in the White House. In an excerpt from the episode, Chang says, “It’s terrifying.”

The famous New York restaurateur, founder of the Momofuku restaurant group, decided to phone a friend – as the show’s rules allow – and then guessed President Benjamin Harrison from the possible options on display, not knowing if Harrison was president.

By guessing, Chang had risked losing most of the cash prizes, but his instincts turned out to be correct and he won the million dollars.

Chang donates the money to the Southern Smoke Foundation, a relief organization for people working in the food and beverage industry.

“Having a million dollars right now, right now, is a game-changer for so many families,” Chang said in the music video for the episode, which aired Sunday.

As coronavirus cases increase in the United States, workers in the restaurant industry have faced massive layoffs and extended holidays. Many of those who have returned to work are risking their health in the face of some customers avoiding or getting angry with coronavirus safety protocols. They also face increased workloads and wage cuts.
