The Kansas City Chiefs reduced their roster to 80 players on Monday, with the most notable outing being defensive end Taco Charlton.
“Taco is going to play in the league,” head coach Andy Reid said during his press briefing on Monday. “He’s too good a player not to do it. It just didn’t work in this case – and the way these cuts are put together, it’s a little different from previous years, so you have to make those decisions. It was obviously a more difficult decision. I hope he’ll hang on to someone or maybe he’ll come back here eventually. But for now, just hang on and keep making a living.
Chiefs defensive coordinator Steve Spagnuolo weighed in on the 26-year-old on Tuesday.
“These are tough decisions, first of all,” admitted Spagnuolo. “Like when I texted her [Monday] – because I didn’t get to see him in the morning, but I texted him reminding him that he helped us win an AFC championship – and sometimes it happens in the championship . But I think more than anything some of the other guys got up and did a great job. I think which was good, I thought (GM) Brett (Veach) made a good point: we’re giving Taco a chance to maybe catch up with another team, so I wish him the best.
For the 53-man roster under Spagnuolo in 2019 and 2020, the Chiefs have retained 10 defensive linemen. The numbers pushed Charlton out of the mix.
“You have the next group of guys over there – you have Demoane (Harris), you have Tim (Ward), you have Josh (Kaindoh). Law? You have a bunch of guys fighting for positions.
Second-year defensive end Mike Danna is another player who has stood out throughout training camp and preseason.
“I’ve talked a lot about Mike,” added Spagnuolo. “You know how I feel about him – his intelligence, his natural abilities. I think what Coach Daly and Terry Braden are doing with him is exceptional. I just saw him – you’re talking about a guy who was in Central Michigan who went to Michigan for a year, and he keeps doing that, and if he can keep doing that, I think he’s gonna help us. “
Charlton, the former 28th overall pick in 2017 for the Dallas Cowboys, ends his career with the Chiefs with seven tackles and 2.0 sacks. His 2020 season has been reduced to seven games due to a broken ankle.
The Chiefs are due to reduce their roster to 53 players on August 31.
