Chelsea 3-1 Leeds United, Premier League: post-match reaction

[ad_1]

Manager Frank Lampard picked what is arguably Chelsea’s best starting XI, with veteran Olivier Giroud getting the nod from Tammy Abraham after his four goals in our midweek fixture against Sevilla for the Champions League . But unlike the “second fiddle”, the first-choice players were unable to keep a clean sheet as former Blues center forward Patrick Bamford quickly took the lead after a series of mistakes in our defense.

It looked like the answer would come quickly, with Timo Werner seemingly ending his four-game scoreless streak at 10 minutes. But his shot hit the underside of the crossbar instead, and didn’t cross the line as expected.

Fortunately, Giroud would make amends almost 20 minutes later. On a cross from Reece James, the veteran would do what he does best: score.

From the half-time, the lion’s share of chances remained on the side of the hosts. We tried so hard that the turning point came from a corner, with Mason Mount helping Kurt Zouma.

After a lot of work from young Leeds goalkeeper Meslier to prevent Chelsea from turning the advantage of a goal into a full kick, he was unable to stop our third goal. Werner helped Christian Pulisic to conclude a great victory for the Blues.

Carefree!

  • A very solid roster selected to face Leeds, after manager Frank Lampard decided to give most of his favorite / first-choice players a break on our midweek trip to Sevilla.
  • As expected, Olivier Giroud’s four-goal performance kept Frank from not selecting the guy for a second game in a row, giving the veteran France his first Premier League start this season.
  • The subs are Christian Pulisic for Hakim Ziyech, Mateo Kovacic for Kai Havertz and Tammy Abraham for Giroud.
  • Glad to finally find the fans in the stands. The ambient, natural sound of the crowd trumps the man-made noise, although the latter is hard work.
  • The ex’s law strikes again …
  • … and Giroud too! Hooray!
  • Next stop: Krasnodar at Stamford Bridge for the Champions League group stage.
  • KTBFFH!
