Chelsea came out with great intention and the appropriate and required levels of effort and desire to stop the slide of two back-to-back 1-0 losing games, and it didn’t take us long to open the scoring.
Ben Chilwell, starting his first Premier League game of the season, took the turn, which was triggered by Ruben Loftus-Cheek, starting his first Premier League game for us in over a year, and finished in second post by young Trevoh Chalobah for his second goal of the season!
Chelsea looked to build on that opening goal in the first ten minutes, creating multiple chances, with Loftus-Cheek and Chilwell coming closer. Lukaku then had the ball in the net, but was rightly flagged offside. Werner then also had the ball in the net, but was penalized quite severely for an alleged foul in the preparation, which was roughly two phases of play before.
We looked to pick up where we left off in the first half in the second half, but one mistake undermined all our good work, with Chilwell fouling Livramento in the box and James Ward-Prowse making no mistakes on the spot. Of course, we should have been well away from the visitors at this point, but the refereeing errors ensured that was not the case.
Tuchel started making his changes, putting Mount then Jorginho, and it was the latter who was fouled from behind by James Ward-Prowse, to reduce Southampton to ten. The referee initially gave only a yellow, but VAR improved it.
Ross Barkley then came on and made a significant difference, starting the movement for Timo Werner’s goal, which was not ruled out for once for whatever reason. Chelsea added a third just minutes later after an absolutely ridiculous streak that saw Lukaku and Azpilicueta both hit the woodwork before Chilwell finished with a volley that would have made Alonso proud.
3-1! Top of the league.
