Chelsea Clinton was surprised on Friday night in New York by a student who said the former first girl "had stoked" hatred behind the massacre committed earlier in the day in Christchurch, New Zealand.

This happened during a vigil on the campus of the University of New York for the 49 people killed and dozens of others injured during the attack.

"I'm so sorry you feel that," Clinton said. "Certainly, it was never my intention. I believe words count. I believe that we must show solidarity. "

Some NYU students told Clinton that she was not welcome to the vigil. One of the students discussed Clinton's recent condemnation of representative Ilhan Omar, D-Minn, for the anti-Semitic remarks of the congressman.

"We must expect all elected officials, regardless of party, and all public figures, to be anti-Semitic," tweeted Clinton on February 10.

"This, right here, is the result of a massacre caused by people like you and the words you give to the world," said a student in Clinton. "And I want you to know that and I want you to feel that deep down inside you. Forty-nine people died because of the rhetoric that you have launched there.

On Friday, Clinton tweeted his condolences following the tragedy in Christchurch.

"Heartbroken and horrified by the white nationalist terrorist attack launched during the Jummah against the mosques and the Muslim community of Christchurch," wrote Clinton. "Keep all those affected by this tragedy in my heart and in my prayers. We need a comprehensive response to the global threat of violent white nationalism."

"I'm so sorry you feel that way," Clinton repeated.

"What is" I'm sorry you think that way "means?" Asked another student.

The New York University student who originally posted the video on Twitter removed her tweets, but the exchange was republished by Caleb Hull of Targeted Victory.

After the video of the confrontation became viral, Clinton received support on social media. Some examples:
