Chelsea show they are title contenders, but central midfielder is a concern after Kante’s latest injury – The Athletic

It was a performance to highlight why Chelsea are a serious title contender and a game that revealed weakness in equal measure.

First the good news. Anyone who saw the way Chelsea fought for a point with 10 men at the home of rivals Liverpool must have been impressed. Many of the characteristics that helped them win the Champions League last season were in the spotlight: brilliant defense, solid organization and character, with coach Thomas Tuchel making an impact from the dugout.

It was a more impressive result than the 1-0 victory at Anfield five months earlier. At the time, there were no passionate crowds to face, while Liverpool were also a side lacking in conviction, confidence and key players due to injuries. Also, there was no downside to playing with 10 men for 45 minutes.

The September international break still offers an early opportunity to take stock and it certainly has so far, so much the better for Chelsea. The victory in the UEFA Super Cup final added a first trophy to the cabinet. There have also been convincing wins and performances in the Premier League against Crystal Palace and Arsenal.

Getting a draw at Liverpool under these circumstances – in particular, with Reece James conceding a penalty and being sent off for handball just before half-time – is the most notable achievement.
