Manchester City beat Chelsea 4-3 on penalties to retain the Carabao Cup after 120 minutes of scoreless goals at Wembley in a match overshadowed by Kepa's refusal to be replaced.

The Chelsea goalkeeper appeared to be suffering from cramp after saving a shot from Sergio Aguero in the final minutes of overtime, but with Willy Caballero in the ensuing game, he refused to leave the field.

His position provoked a furious response from Chelsea manager Maurizio Sarri, who seemed ready to leave the stadium before changing his mind and returning to the sideline.

Aguero was directly in action for City, accused by Jorginho of giving a quick free kick, and again involved while he was coming down right and was unsuccessfully calling on a handball after his center was blocked.

But Chelsea started settling and a David Luiz balloon caused trouble to Aymeric Laporte before the calls for a foul from Oleksandr Zinchenko on N 'Golo Kante were dismissed.

Luiz produced two solid free-throw header as City started to press on the left flank, Raheem Sterling involved, and then Aguero controlled the ball from far with Bernardo Silva's help, but managed a difficult half-volley.

As the half-hour approached, Kepa dived for Aguero's deflected shot and Luiz entered the notebook for committing a foul on Bernardo Silva.

Nicholas Otamendi met with a Zinchenko center, but failed to generate enough power to cause serious problems. City was forced to change quickly when Laporte changed a hamstring and was replaced by Vincent Kompany.

Fernandinho opened fire at the beginning of the second match, then Kepa tried to deceive a center of City but managed to get out.

Hazard found room to enter the penalty area, but waited too long and was closed by Otamendi before Aguero dropped the ball for the flag to rise.

Fernandinho was warned for falsifying Ross Barkley after the Chelsea midfielder closed it, Luiz beating the free kick too much.

But after 67 minutes, Chelsea gave Hazard a chance as he saw he was coming to the touchline, shooting the ball to Kante who scored.

Four minutes later, they had another opportunity, Barkley was shooting too high – but City had returned to the back and, after Antonio Rudiger had committed a foul on Bernardo Silva just above the surface of repair, De Bruyne missed the free kick.

At 15 minutes from the end of the game and at the opening of the game, Hazard created a space for Pedro, which was reduced to nothing.

City brought Ilkay Gundogan to David Silva, Chelsea brought a change as Callum Hudson-Odoi replaced Pedro and De Bruyne gave the place five minutes from the end for Leroy Sane.

As the weather was running out and overtime was announced, Jorginho made a mistake on Sterling while he was trying to clear himself and he was happy.

Sarri hired Ruben Loftus-Cheek for Barkley before City won a late corner, Sane had a bad back pass, and Otamendi was hired for a crazy challenge on Hazard.

Willian made a free-kick on the left, Ederson touched, and with a few seconds to go, a great turn and a Loftus-Cheek pass seemed to have made the race run faster before the flag was up.

Fernandinho, who appeared to be suffering from headaches, was replaced by Danilo. Gonzalo Higuain replaced Willian while Chelsea made a change in what was a low-key start to overtime.

Ederson claimed a low center of Hazard in the penalty area, then Jorginho went wide from the edge of the field as Chelsea began to increase the pressure.

At 10 minutes of overtime, Sterling created Aguero, repelled by Cesar Azpilicueta's superb defense. The ball ended up taking a corner cleared by Chelsea.

And three minutes from the end, Rudiger slipped to allow Aguero to run to the edge of the Chelsea area, his shot saved by Kepa.

The goalkeeper then seemed to be affected by the cramps, but did not leave the field and the replacement was finally abandoned to the fury of the Chelsea bench.

At the start of the shootout, Ederson saved Jorginho's penalty, converting Gundogan to seal a quick advantage for City.

Azpilicueta rushed into the upper corner before Aguero saw his penalty slip under Kepa's plunge.

Emerson kept Chelsea in touch, then Kepa briefly escaped, dipping to his right to prevent Sane's kick. Only, Luiz hit the post with Chelsea's next penalty.

Bernardo Silva put City on the edge of the trophy and, although Hazard scored the best shot in the net to give Chelsea a glimmer of hope, Sterling crushed his shot to seal the contract with City.
