The idea of a Chevrolet Corvette with an engine in the center was born more than 50 years ago, but the real C8 Corvette also had a long period of development. GM executives and members of the C8 team recently introduced the new supercar at the 25th edition of the National Corvette Museum.th Anniversary, and it contained interesting information on the creation of the C8.
We saw some first C8 concept sketches through an anonymous survey. Motor1.com reader and former GM designer who shared them with us, but this video gives us all kinds of background on the process. The clip should begin at 26 minutes with Kirk Bennion's presentation on exterior design. Bennion is responsible for the C8's exterior design and opens the discussion with some kind of bomb. When Chevrolet made its C7 Corvette way debut in January 2013, there was already a life-size C8 clay model being evaluated in GM's isolated design studio.
The presentation then discusses preliminary sketches and the development of scale models to explore different design flavors. A dozen small models were built – each taking about two weeks – and the presentation also mentions three of those who are becoming full-scale demonstrators. They all share similar design elements with the hood and the glass, but the side sockets were very different. One of the models featured large catches at the top of the wheel arches that looked exactly like what we saw on the Ferrari 488 Pista. Could GM have some insider information there?
The presentation continues throughout the development process of the C8 look until we arrive at the car that was finally unveiled in July. The production car has been praised and critiqued, and one can not help wondering if the new Corvette could have been better decorated if some of these other design elements had played a larger role in the final product. In any case, we are impressed by the amount of information that GM has shared on the development of the C8, and we look forward to seeing what lies ahead.
