Chicago Bears assistant coach news and rumors

On Thursday, the Atlanta Falcons announced Dave Ragone was hired as the offensive coordinator on the coaching staff of new head coach Arthur Smith. Ragone had been with the Chicago Bears from 2016-2020, and last season he was their visiting game coordinator. While Smith is expected to call games in Atlanta, it’s still a nice promotion for Ragone.

Chicago half-backs coach Charles London, who is expected to join Smith as quarterbacks coach, is also in line for promotion with the Falcons. NFL Network Tom pelissero reports the move is likely, but it was formalized in Atlanta’s latest announcement.

In case you missed it, yesterday it was reported that D-line coach Jay Rodgers is leaving Chicago to join the Los Angeles Chargers. The move has yet to be announced by LA, but he will either continue to work with the defensive line or take on the role of coordinator.

The Chargers also plan to interview Jonathon Gannon for the opening of their defensive coordinator according to the NFL Network’s Ian Rapoport. The Bears have met Gannon before and some believe he might be an option in Atlanta.

The three other coaches the Bears have met or have requested to meet for their vacant defensive coordinator position, James Bettcher, George Edwards and Mike Singletary, are still up for the job.

The Detroit Lions hire Saints secondary coach Aaron Glenn as their new defensive coordinator. Josina Anderson reports that he informed the Bears of his decision, so it’s possible he had or already had an interview with Chicago.

Some still believe that if the Bears stay internal for their next defensive coordinator, it will be safety coach Sean Desai.
