Chicago Bears head coach Matt Nagy no longer calls

It took weeks and weeks of underperformance and outside coaxing, but eventually Bears head coach Matt Nagy withdrew from the calls.

On Monday night, offensive coordinator Bill Lazor will call the pieces, as announced by Nagy today.

It felt like it was gaining momentum for a while, even as Matt Nagy seemed to resist the idea. Whether Lazor suddenly makes a huge difference or not, here’s the reality: The Bears (and Nagy) absolutely had to do it now before the season was completely over. Maybe it doesn’t make any difference, given the personnel and the injuries, but you have to KNOW if Nagy as player-caller is the problem. This will give you, at a minimum, additional information for a post-season assessment.

And who knows? Maybe it gives an unexpected spark to an offense that has gone from murky to bad to brutal.

More to come soon.
