Chicago Bears coach Matt Nagy has made it clear that veteran Andy Dalton will be the team’s starting quarterback for the season opener on September 12 at the Los Angeles Rams, but it won’t It’s only a matter of time before Dalton takes his place for the franchise’s future in first-round rookie pick Justin Fields. The Ohio State’s No.11 pick finished 14 for 20 for 142 yards and one touchdown (score of 106.7, which would have ranked No.5 in the NFL last season) while rushing five times for 33 yards and a score.
Those are good numbers, but Bears fans well remember how then-rookie Mitchell Trubisky looked in the 2017 preseason. Dalton will start again this Saturday against Buffalo and Nagy said on Monday. that Dalton will actually play more than he did against Miami, but that he also wants Fields to have more time with Chicago’s No.1 offense against the opponents’ starting defense.
Obviously, that will depend on how the Bears fare from a win / loss standpoint for when Nagy makes the switch in the regular season. It’s hard to see Chicago win to the Rams as a 7-point underdog in Week 1. The Bears should then be favored in their home opener in Week 2 against the Bengals, but one more time. strong underdogs in Week 3 in Cleveland.
So, one would imagine that the first Fields would receive the call would be Week 4 at home against a poor Detroit team. Trubisky got his first start four years ago in Week 5 at home against Minnesota when the Bears were 1-3. Then again, Dalton is much better than Week 1 starter Mike Glennon.
All other things being equal, the coaches would prefer to give a rookie QB his first start at home and preferably against less defense. The Lions would qualify on both counts.
The Chicago schedule gets a lot tougher after that: Week 5 in Las Vegas, Week 6 against Green Bay, Week 7 in Tampa Bay, Week 8 against San Francisco, and Week 9 in Pittsburgh before the Week 10 bye.
