CHICAGO (WLS) – A woman has been killed in a hit and run after a nearby shooting was reported on Sunday morning in Horner Park, in the northwest of the country.

Just after 3 a.m., a Toyota Corolla struck a Nissan Rogue as it was heading west on Irving Park Road from Damen Avenue, Migdalia Bulnes, deputy head of the Bureau of Detectives, told a conference release later Sunday morning.

The CPD initially said the crash occurred after a shootout with a black sedan, Chicago police said.

However, Bulnes said the origin of the shooting was not immediately clear.

She said that a CPD officer was on duty at the intersection of Irving Park Road and Damen when the officer saw and heard gunshots coming from the Toyota.

The officer followed the Toyota west on Irving Park Road with the hazard warning lights activated until the car passed the brake light at Irving Park and Western Avenue and struck the Nissan in a northbound direction, Bulnes said.

A 37-year-old woman was thrown from the Rogue as a result of the crash, authorities said. She was taken to Illinois Masonic Medical Center, where she died, police said. She has not yet been identified.

The Rogue’s driver, a 27-year-old man, was also taken to Illinois Masonic for observation but suffered no serious injuries, police said.

An unknown number of occupants fled the Toyota on foot, police said.

Police have recovered a weapon from the scene and are examining surveillance footage.

CPD expects traffic in Irving Park to be affected until approximately 10:30 a.m.
No one was in custody later Sunday morning.
