CHICAGO (WLS) – Exclusive video shows the moment someone fired shots at a warehouse party on Chicago’s south side over the weekend.

The scene was chaotic, with bullets flying around as people ran for cover. Now the mayor plans to hold the owner of this building responsible.

The big party inside a warehouse on the south side of town ended with 15 people shot and two dead. Video taken early Sunday morning inside the after-hours party shows people dancing and having fun. Moments later, gunshots broke out.

“Play music, people are having fun, and the next thing you know, I hear gunshots,” a witness told ABC7 Chicago. “Then everyone got down to the ground screaming.”

A witness who did not want to be identified said that a friend of hers had been beaten twice.

“He was shot and asked me to come and help him, so I took him to the hospital,” the witness said. “He was in front of the party, that’s how he got shot. They were shooting in front of the party.”

The shooting took place just before 5 a.m. Sunday in the 6700 block of S. South Chicago Avenue.

The building is used for auto repairs and towing, but overnight it was packed.

Chicago’s Department of Business and Consumer Affairs has twice issued cease and desist orders to several businesses located at the address. The offenses, which began in 2018, involved the illegal operation of a cigar and liquor store without the proper operating license.

In 2019, the city said the owner of the building was arrested for breaking that order and the illegal business was closed.

“This was clearly an unauthorized use for this facility,” said Chicago Mayor Lori Lightfoot.

“Given the history, I would expect some important steps to be taken.”

The medical examiner identified the two killed as Rayneesha Dotson, 30, and Lionel Darling, 39. Dotson’s family said she had just moved to Texas to escape gun violence and was back to visit her when she was killed.

Chicago Police believe the shooting was gang related.

“Everyone was on the ground trying to find a way out,” said the witness. “It ruined me on the inside.”

City records show there was a follow-up investigation in 2019 and no issues were found. Now the mayor is working on the case.

At present, no one is being held for the shooting.
