Chicago Mayor Lori Lightfoot on Thursday called for the release of video footage that may shed light on the police killing of a 13-year-old boy this week.

The Chicago Police Department said the boy was shot in the chest just after 2:30 a.m. Monday, when officers responded to calls for shots. Police saw two men in a nearby alley and one of them fled, police said.

A policeman opened fire and beat the boy after a “confrontation,” police said. The department tweeted a photo of a handgun recovered from the scene.

Lightfoot, who has a 13-year-old daughter, urged the city’s Civilian Police Accountability Office to release camera footage of the police body to the boy’s family and then to the public.

“Because his family and the public will no doubt have many questions, we need to post all relevant videos as soon as possible,” Lightfoot said in a series of tweets. “Recognizing that these are the most complex cases COPA investigates, transparency and speed are crucial.”

In response, COPA said it “is currently making every effort and seeking all legal avenues that will allow the public release of all video material that captures the boy’s tragic fatal shooting”.

In a statement Thursday, Chicago Police Superintendent David Brown called “categorically” for the release of all video footage relating to the fatal shooting.

Windy City’s top cop also said his “greatest fear” was “a fatal encounter between one of our own and a minor, especially given the recent increase in violent crime involving minors across our city. “.

The murder came as the city grapples with an increase in violent crime that has left dozens injured and at least four police gunned down in the space of two weeks.

More recently, a man was killed after shooting at a policeman and a security guard. Last week, an incident saw one person killed and seven others injured.

As of March 28, the city had reported 129 murders, up from 97 during the same period last year, according to police data. In the same time frame, there were 565 shootings, up from 407 last year.
