Chicago Mayor Lori Lightfoot has come under fire for continuing to host a music festival amid the reinstatement of COVID-19 restrictions.

Despite plans to resume more pandemic restrictions in the city, the Democratic mayor continued to host Lollapalooza, which is one of the country’s largest music festivals.

“At the same time threatening possible restrictions if cases exceed 200 per day, Mayor Lori Lightfoot is moving forward with plans to bring 100,000 per day to Grant Park for Lollapalooza,” the reporter said. Chicago Tribune, Gregory Pratt.

Lightfoot herself later appeared in Lollapalooza telling the massive crowds, “Thank you for covering yourself up and getting upset.” Despite frequent criticism of the festival being held, Lightfoot continued to defend his decision.

“It’s outside. We’ve been hosting large-scale events all over town since June with no major issues or issues,” Lightfoot said. “The Lolla team has been phenomenal. They have hired their own public health experts who have been working hand in hand with us since we started these discussions.”

Lollapalooza had already been canceled in 2020 due to pandemic concerns. This cancellation would have cost “at least $ 35 million in sales” and “nearly $ 9 million in lost revenue.”

However, amid various concerns about the Delta variant as well as new COVID-19 restrictions, many people viewed the music festival as a “super-broadcaster” event.

“Will @chicagosmayor Lightfoot be blamed for endorsing a # COVID19 supercast event this weekend – @lollapalooza, three days of musical euphoria with huge crowds and no masks?” journalist Laurie Garrett tweeted.

Tony Shaffer, retired Defense Department member, also tweeted “Wow – COVID is the smartest virus in history – he will wait for @LoriLightfoot to get the city of Chicago all kinds of tax revenue before it does not become super dangerous and transmissible! “

Sports journalist Julio Rausseo commented on Lightfoot’s apparent hypocrisy by tweeting, “According to @klefurgy, it doesn’t matter since @chicagosmayor is backstage @lollapalooza. What is strange is that the mayor is masked in outdoors with the general public but not with the boujie celebrities. “
