Chicago shooting: 2 CPD officers shot dead, 1 killed near the 63rd, Bell in West Englewood

CHICAGO (WLS) – Two Chicago police officers were gunned down on Saturday night in the south of the city, CPD officials said. One of them later died.

Chicago Police said the shooting occurred at around 9:10 p.m. in the 6300 block of South Bell Avenue, and left officers in serious to critical condition.

They were taken to the University of Chicago Medical Center, where a crowd of officers gathered after 10 p.m. others seemed emotional.

A policewoman succumbed to her injuries, police said.

A male officer continues to fight for his life early Sunday morning.

Police said at a press conference on Sunday morning that officers carried out a traffic check on South Bell, in which shots were fired.

This is the 27th time a Chicago cop has been shot this year and the 11th time a cop has been shot.

“They deserve our consideration, and they deserve our prayers every day that they can return home safely to their families. Sadly, that did not happen tonight, and our hearts ache from losing consciousness. life, ”said Mayor Lori Lightfoot.

“We are asking to see if Chicago should pray and for the two officers, their families, their fellow officers. We are grappling with the facts about this,” said the first deputy superintendent. Eric Carter said.

Two suspects have been taken into custody, police said. A suspect, who was shot, is in stable condition at Christ Hospital. The search for a third person continues. Police also recovered a weapon from the scene.

An active scene was visible on South Bell Avenue and West 63rd Street in West Englewood.

About a block from the shooting, neighbors watched cautiously from their front yards, which have been described as a “quiet block.”

“Be careful, they are always looking for someone,” warned a woman as she passed a neighbor.

Dozens of officers could be seen patrolling the neighborhood and blocking streets in the area as a police helicopter hovered overhead.

Cook County Sheriff’s Deputies and K9 units were also at the scene.

In a statement, CPD Superintendent David Brown said: “The Chicago Police Department lost one of our own in an incomprehensible act of violence. A 29-year-old female police officer assigned to the community safety team was shot and killed in the line of duty on Saturday night. second officer was also shot dead and is in critical condition.

“These officers put the safety and lives of others before their own, serving with courage and honor knowing the cost.

“Please pray for the family and loved ones of the deceased officer who will now face a world without her. Please also pray for the recovery of the officer who is fighting for his life.

“I ask you to please keep their fellow officers in your thoughts as they deal with this heartbreaking tragedy.

“We will never forget the sacrifices these officers made to protect this city. We cannot forget.”

Supt. Brown is expected to speak Sunday morning. Chicago Police Department command staff will speak to the media at 11 a.m.
