The administration of outgoing mayor of Chicago, Rahm Emanuel, is suing actor Jussie Smollett for overtime costs incurred by police officers to investigate his alleged attack, although prosecutors have abruptly dropped all charges against Smollett last month.
According to the Chicago Tribune, the trial holds Smollett liable for $ 130,106, representing 1,836 hours of overtime, which he did not repay by the city's deadline. It does not specify the exact number of damages that the city is seeking.
Smollett's lawyer sent a letter last week warning the town that Smollett "will not be intimidated" to pay the money.
The new lawsuit will likely offer both parties a forum to revive the case, in a court of public opinion, because Emanuel in particular was visibly outraged after the Cook County attorney, Kim Foxx dropped all charges against Smollett, calling the decision "money laundering."
In response, Smollett's lawyer, Mark Geragos, said that the mayor of Chicago "was acting literally in a haphazard way."
The controversy is about an alleged attack based on the hatred that Smollett suffered last month, which, according to the police, was staged. Smollett claims to have been the victim of a brutal assault on two men motivated by racism and homophobia.
