The number of shooting incidents across the city of Chicago for the month of July and over the past seven months topped the previous year, according to new figures released by police officials on Sunday.

The Chicago Police Department is reporting a total of 461 shootings and 614 shooting victims for the month of July, up from 402 shootings and 561 shootings during the same period in 2020.
These figures bring the total since the beginning of the year to 1,973 shootings and 2,471 gunshot fatalities, compared to 1,779 incidents and 2,217 fatalities during the same seven-month period in 2020.
Chicago police reported 105 total murders citywide in July, slightly below the 107 total in 2020. About 90% of murders have been attributed to gun violence, police officials said. Overall, the city has reported 445 murders in the past seven months, up from 446 in 2020.

Chicago Police Department Superintendent David Brown recently launched a new 50-officer gun investigation team with the goal of reducing gun violence on city streets. The team is tasked with locating, tracking and arresting gun dealers, gun dealers and others involved in the deadly trade in illegal gun sales.
So far, officers have recovered more than 7,289 firearms in 2021, up 28% from the same period last year, including more than 368 assault rifles.
