CHICAGO – The Chicago White Sox declined to offer 2021 contracts to right fielder Nomar Mazara and pitcher Carlos Rodon on Wednesday, sending the pair into free agency.
The White Sox also announced that they have reached a one-year deal with reliever Jace Fry worth $ 862,500. Fry, 27, went 0-1 with a 3.66 ERA in 18 appearances with the team during the pandemic-cut season.
Rodon was selected by Chicago with the third overall pick in the 2014 entry draft. He broke into the majors the following year and looked like he could be a key member of the team’s rotation for years to come. before being hampered by a series of injuries.
The southpaw, who turns 28 on Dec. 10, is 29-33 with a 4.14 ERA in 97 career major league games, including 92 starts. He has made four appearances this year, going 0-2 with an 8.22 ERA.
Mazara, 25, was acquired in a trade to Texas in December 2019 for minor league outfielder Steele Walker. The slugger was expected to fill Chicago’s hole straight up, but he’s only hit .228 with a homerun in 42 games this year.
Wednesday was the deadline for major league teams to offer contracts to unsigned players on 40-player rosters.
“We have decided to forgo the arbitration process and instead engage with the players and their representatives as free agents,” White Sox general manager Rick Hahn said in a statement. “We plan to keep in touch with Nomar and Carlos and assess their possible suitability with our club as we move forward through the offseason.”
Fry became a valuable southpaw in the Chicago pickup box, holding left-handed hitters to a career-long batting average of .184. He is 5-8 with a 4.75 ERA in 156 games over four seasons, all with the White Sox.
