Chicago's first openly homosexual Mayor, Lightfoot swears an oath, pledges to reduce corruption

Lori Lightfoot entered the story on Monday when she was sworn in as the first openly gay Mayor of Chicago.

Lightfoot, a former federal prosecutor, introduced his wife and 11-year-old daughter. She seemed to choke when she said to her 90-year-old mother, "You and dad said I could be everything I wanted, my gratitude to you knows no bounds."

In its half-hour speech, Lightfoot committed to keeping the city safe and promised to establish "strong schools for all children, regardless of neighborhood or postal code" .

She continued, "A city where people want to age without running away.A city of sanctuary against fear, where no one must hide in the shadow.A city affordable for families and seniors and where every job reports a living wage. "

Lightfoot, who is the 56th mayor of the city, inherits from a very divided Chicago. His predecessor has left behind a record number of homicides, soaring crime rates and a deep racial fracture that continues to polarize the windy city.

Lightfoot, which has won nearly 75% of the vote, has already begun to make waves. In her first official act as mayor of Chicago, she signed a decree aimed at limiting the power of the aldermen in the departments of the city.

"This is the beginning, not the end, of a series of government ethics reforms that we will bring to the city," Lightfoot said at the signing.
