IONIA COUNTY, MI – About 250,000 chickens died in a barn fire at the Herbruck poultry ranch on Tuesday, April 30th.

No injuries were reported by workers or firefighters.

Despite the fire, the company – a major egg supplier that includes McDonald's restaurants – is among the customers – said it resumed business on Wednesday, May 1.

The fire was reported around 6:15 pm. in a barn near M-66 and Portland Road in Saranac.

Police said the fire had melted thick smoke for miles, with smoke as far as Hudsonville.

"The building was occupied by about 250,000 hens at the time of the fire and unfortunately none of the birds in this building survived," Herb Herbruck said in a statement.

"We are deeply saddened by the tragic loss of our chickens. "

The company plans to rebuild and said local contractors have been on the scene since Tuesday night.

Herbruck said that he was grateful to the firefighters who managed to contain the fire in the barn before the fire spread to other structures on the property. The workers also acted quickly to contact the fire department to minimize the damage.

The company will always be able to meet the needs of its customers, he said.

The cause of the fire is under investigation. The company is working with fire investigators to find the cause, said Herbruck.

This is the second fire since a fire occurred in February 2018 in the delivery and receiving plant which caused significant damage.
