Chiefs left tackle Eric Fisher to miss Super Bowl after suffering Achilles tear

Initial fears regarding the injury to the Kansas City Chiefs offensive tackle have been confirmed.

NFL Network Insider Ian Rapoport reported that the left tackle tore his Achilles in Sunday’s 38-24 victory over the Buffalo Bills, according to a source with information on the situation.

Coach Andy Reid hinted that the news would be bad Sunday night when he said, “It’s not going too well with Achilles,” of Fisher.

It’s a blow to Fisher and the Chiefs, heading for the Tampa Bay Buccaneers without their starting left tackle. With right tackle Mitchell Schwartz also out with a back injury, KC plans to face the Bucs without their starting two tackles in the Super Bowl.

We saw what kind of damage Shaquil Barrett and Jason Pierre-Paul can cause against offensive reserve linemen in the NFC Championship game when they harassed Aaron Rodgers, who was missing all-star left tackle David Bakhtiari. Fisher’s absence could prove to be a huge hole for the Chiefs to overcome.

After Fisher left the game, Mike Remmers moved from right tackle to left tackle, Andrew Wylie moved from right guard to RT and veteran Stefen Wisniewski entered the game at RG. The Chiefs have two weeks to find the best five combo to protect Mahomes in the Super Bowl.

This is doubly bad timing for Fisher – not that there’s ever a “right time” to blow your Achilles. The 29-year-old is entering a contract year in 2021 and will have to fight to get back on the pitch, with the season starting in eight months.
