On Sunday, quarterback Kansas City leaders Patrick Mahomes will play his first game of the NFL regular season on indoor ground: the Ford Field in Detroit, Michigan.
Once the fans (and the media) have realized that this would be the first time Mahomes would play in an ideal environment, he was immediate speculation on how this could improve its performance.
But when the press questioned him Wednesday, the NFL's most useful player did not seem to think it would change things much.
"Other than it's raining or it's snowing outside, I do not think it makes a big difference," Mahomes said. "I know when [you] go out, you must always play football – to make the pitches. I played in [domes] many times, and it's like any other football game. "
But will that change the preparation of Mahomes?
"No … not at all," he says. "I mean, we practice indoors. I've already played some games inside. We played pre-season last year inside some. You are preparing as if it were another football game. I think that's how you do it, no matter if you're in a dome [or] it's snowing [or] it's raining. You simply need to make sure you are ready to face the elements or circumstances. "
In this way, Mahomes learns from his head coach (and mentor), Andy Reid, who sticks to his routine of the week. Mahomes seemed much more interested in defending the Detroit Lions than playing indoors.
"They played physical football," he said about the opponent's next game against the Philadelphia Eagles in Week Three. "They played a lot on the men's blanket, they really got into everybody's face, and then they stopped the running game for the most part.
"I think the biggest thing they did against the Eagles was that they capitalized on the turnarounds," he added. "I think that [is] It's an important thing they focus on: trying to get the ball out – if it's an interception or trying to get it out of the guys running with it. It's a great thing they capitalize on. So we will try to protect the ball and move it to the field. "
Whether the land is inside … or outside.
