WASHINGTON COUNTY, Maine – A child from Washington County died Monday, April 8 after contracting the flu.
It was the first death of a child associated with influenza in Maine during the 2018-2019 flu season. The child did not receive his flu shot and was found positive for influenza A.
"Our heart goes out to the family and community affected by this tragedy," said Nancy Beardsley, acting director of the CDC in Maine. "The Maine CDC wants to make sure the Mainers know what to do to protect themselves and their loved ones, starting with vaccination.The flu vaccine is still widely available and it's not too late to to get vaccinated."
The flu can be treated with an antiviral drug. This type of treatment works best when it is started within two days of the onset of the illness. Starting treatment later may also be helpful, especially for people at high risk of serious influenza illness.
Anyone should see a doctor if their child has any of the following symptoms:
- Difficulty or changes in breathing
- Blue lips or face
- Chest pain
- dehydration
- Do not alert or interact when awake
- Seizures
- Fever above 104 ° F
- Fever or cough that improves but then comes back or worsens
- Aggravation of chronic medical conditions
An influenza-related death occurs when a person exhibits symptoms with an influenza test and dies before recovering.
Maine CDC recommends that people protect themselves from the flu by following the "No Flu 4 You" guidelines:
- Wash your hands
- Cover your cough
- Stay home when you're sick
- To get vaccinated
The last time a child died in Maine after contracting the flu, it was three years ago, in March 2016, according to the Maine CDC.
