It is perhaps a great paradox that one of the most iconic groups of Chilean music does not have a large and daring number of audio-visual pieces. It is true that in 1981, Pablo Perelman's camera was there to record the concert at the Caupolicán Theater which marked his return to the country after several years – which became the documentary somewhere in America – or that the anthological presentation in Machu Picchu. Picchu directed by Reinaldo Sepúlveda has entered the story. But he is adamant that about Los Jaivas, in other words one of the national groups having a richer history, full of twists, losses and a nomadic life, it does not matter. There is not much more in terms of film material.
The project, which is called Los Jaivas, all together, begins to articulate to get into the history of the group, a major challenge that had not been still been tackled in the form of a documentary series. At the head will be Rodolfo Gárate, director who has been applauded with his documentary Incomplete Plan: The Way of Alain Johannes, on the Chilean musician recognized in the American rock scene and tormented by his personal tragedies. Something that may have weighed when selecting a name to take on a project on the authors' story behind Mambo de Machaguay, traversed by the prodigy of his rock sounds and avant-garde, but also crossed by the exile and the death of Gabriel Parra and Eduardo Alquinta
These two fundamental figures of the group will mark precisely the axis of Los Jaivas …, who would realize the dream years of its members making a great documentary about the life and work of the group, according to what they say in their close circle. According to the first published information, the series is based on the journey undertaken by Paris Claudio Parra and Mario Mutis, in the last decade, in order to reveal the celluloid boxes that keep the history of the group and that connects them with his companions
The project, which is taking its first steps, participated this week in France in the market of Sunny Side of Doc, seeking to generate agreements with foreign partners, with the producer Maria Elena Wood (Ramona, Mary & Mike ) as a representative.
But also, at the time when the current quintet is about to celebrate its 55th anniversary and 30 of which are commemorated since the death of its historic drummer, another film project continues to advance . It is High Bbad, a fiction film prepared by the director Erasmo Parra, one of the children of Claudio Parra, and located in Viña del Mar in 1963, when the group was dedicated to the rhythms of jazz, bolero and tropics.
"The story ends when their career begins as Los Jaivas," says the Amsterdan-based filmmaker about a project that already has agreements with Belgian, Dutch and French producers and, all by applying to different European funds, March 2019 as the tentative date for filming. Diego Noguera and Céline Reymond are part of the cast, but the question remains who will play the lead roles.
