Georgian Nikoloz Basilashvili celebrated Sunday the first ATP title of his career by defeating Argentine Leonardo Mayer in the finals of the tennis tournament in Hamburg.

Basilashvili, who entered the German tournament since the standings, beat Mayer 6-4, 0-6, 7-5 in two hours and twelve minutes of play to complete the best week of his career.

The Argentinian could not celebrate his third title in Hamburg, his favorite circuit tournament. In the northern city of Germany, Mayer won his only two ATP titles, in 2014 and 2017, and today he was at the doors of a new consecration.

"I want to congratulate Nikoloz for his excellent game," said Mayer at a prize-giving ceremony in which he was delighted to greet his partner and their young son, present in the gallery.

"I have played the best matches of my life on this pitch," added the Argentinian, who also welcomed tournament director, former German tennis player Michael Stich, who will leave office after ten years.

Basilashvili, meanwhile, managed to lift his first 26 years after falling in the finals of Kitzbühel, in 2016, and Memphis, in 2017. After entering the rankings, the Georgian beat level players in clay as Philipp Kohlschreiber, Uruguayan Pablo Cuevas, Spanish Pablo Carreño and Chilean Nicolás Jarry to win a prize of 350,000 euros.

"I worked very hard for that, it's an incredible moment for me," said the winner, who acknowledged being "extremely tired "after playing seven games in Hamburg, including those in the standings. "It was a very tight match, I was lucky on some points," he said.

The ATP Hamburg, category 500, was played on clay and distributed more than 1.6 million euros in prizes.
