A region of the brain, called the endorestiform nucleus, was found near the junction of the spinal cord after nearly 30 years of suspicion for the first time, academic sources reported Tuesday.
"The region is intriguing because it appears to be absent from the Rhes macaque and the other animals that we have studied," said its discoverer, George Paxinos, a cerebral cartographer and expert at the US. University of New South Wales (UNSW).
] "They must exist unique elements in the human brain beyond their large size and the endo-terminal nucleus may be one," said the Greek-Australian expert in neuroscience research in Australia and author of a world reference atlas of the brain
The nucleus endorestiform is located in the lower cerebellar peduncle, an area that incorporates sensory and motor information to refine our posture, our balance and fine motor movements, which include small movements in the hands, feet, fingers, lips or tongue.
"I can only guess at its functions, but considering the part of the brain where it is located., could be involved in the control of fine motor movements ," said the scientist.
The discovery could contribute to the discovery of forms of treatment of diseases such as neuromotor Parkinson's disease, according to the statement.
