Data from the USDA show that China made a small purchase of US pork from August 16 to 22, before a new 10% tariff on agricultural imports came into effect September 1st.
China bought 1,861 metric tons of US pork last week, up from 220 tons a week earlier, according to USDA data. A larger purchase of 10,211 metric tonnes was made between August 2 and August 8.
Purchases continue despite escalating trade tensions, reports Reuters. The fight against African swine fever (ASF) continues to affect the largest producer and consumer of pork in the world, pushing pork prices in China to record levels.
On August 29, the Chinese Ministry of Commerce announced that it would work to increase pork imports and release frozen meat from state reserves to increase stocks.
After China announced additional tariffs on US agricultural products, US President Donald Trump announced new rights of about $ 550 billion on targeted Chinese products.
