China has taken millions of people into custody as the country faces the largest coronavirus outbreak in months due to the more transmissible delta variant.
The first reports last week noted that the variant had expanded to 15 cities, but that number had risen to 20 cities on Monday. The latest outbreak began on July 20 with the variant detected on a plane that arrived at Nanjing Lukou International Airport during a routine cleanup.
The infection has resulted in 184 new infections since then, 52 of which were linked to the delta variant, Reuters reported.

“After their work was completed, due to substandard cleaning and protection measures, some staff members may have been infected, causing the virus to spread among the cleaning staff,” Ding Jie, general manager deputy of the Nanjing Disease Control and Prevention Center, mentioned.

Ding said new cases are “constantly being discovered,” the South China Morning Post reported.
The delta variant has been shown to be much more transmissible than other strains of COVID-19: Centers for Disease Control director Rochelle Walensky said in mid-July that the variant “is spreading incredibly effectively and now represents over 83% of the virus circulating. United States.”

As such, China has acted quickly to contain the spread of the new strain and all possible cases. All flights from Nanjing have been canceled until Aug. 11, but that hasn’t stopped the spread within the country itself.
Local governments in major cities, including Beijing, have tested millions of residents while maintaining strict quarantine measures on all potentially infected areas.

Beijing has cut all train, bus and plane travel with areas that have detected new cases. Only “essential travelers” are allowed in as long as they provide a negative nucleic acid test, The Guardian reported.
“The city is still dark and complicated,” officials from central Zhuzhou city in Hunan province said on Monday, ordering a strict three-day lockdown for more than 1.2 million residents.

New cases were discovered in the popular tourist destination of Hainan on Monday, indicating that the country’s problem will only get worse in the coming days.
