Following the merger of Vicarious Visions with Blizzard, it has now been announced that Chinese video game giant Tencent – known for titles like League of Legends and Clash of clans – will acquire a “majority stake” in Klei Entertainment.
If you don’t know this Canada-based developer, this is the studio behind games like Don’t starve and Ninja Mark. Klei Entertainment founder Jaime ‘Bigfoot’ Cheng says Klei will retain “complete creative and operating autonomy in all aspects of the studio, including projects, talent and more.”
In an FAQ on Klei’s website, Cheng explained that there would be no immediate changes in the future regarding “personnel, projects or other operations.” As for the reason for this decision, it will allow the studio to “not have to worry about finances”, to do its “best creative job” and to navigate a changing industry.
“There are some annoying accounting changes that we will have to adapt to. Other than that, I will continue to run the studio as before, with no changes in staff, projects or other operations.”

According to a report by Niko Partners via GamesIndustry.biz, Tencent invested in 31 games industry-related deals last year – a new record for the company. It was a “mix of acquisitions, mergers, minor and major issues and rounds of financing”.
Some of those deals included a minor stake in PlatinumGames and a stake in Japanese publisher Marvelous. With the kickoff of 2021, who knows what Tencent might acquire in the months to come.
