The most obvious reason is, of course, the price. The iPhone X was the first iPhone to break the $ 1,000 mark, bringing Apple out of the high price bracket accepted between $ 500 and $ 800 in the country and in a brand new luxury group, reports the daily Reuters.

"Most Chinese smartphone buyers are not willing to shell out more than $ 1,000 for a phone," said Neil Shah, director of research at Counterpoint. "This left a gap in the segment below $ 800, which Chinese sellers have caught up with both hands."

Retailers claim that many upgrade products have been abandoned by Apple, many of them switching from Chinese smartphone brands to Chinese smartphone brands, but very few are doing the opposite.

Apple has responded by drastically reducing prices in the country through aggressive promotions for the iPhone XR and the iPhone XS / Max.

But price is not the only reason. In a country that attaches great importance to new designs and features, many people think that the iPhone has been abandoned by local brands. This includes the quality of the camera, which is traditionally one of Apple's strengths.

He Fan, CEO of Huishoubao, who buys and resells used phones, said he noticed a change in Apple's consumption for Huawei, motivated by Chinese love for selfies and the emphasis placed on the quality of the camera. Huawei has links with the German manufacturer of Leica cameras since 2016.

"Huawei's cameras have become significantly better than Apple's in that they more closely match the tastes of Chinese consumers," he said.

Compared to dual cameras common to most smartphones, the Huawei P20 Pro has three rear-facing cameras, plus improved zoom capabilities.

And Huawei is not the only Chinese brand of smartphones to compete with the iPhone in terms of functionality – the same goes for Oppo and Vivo.

The devices came with features not available on the iPhone, including under-the-glass fingerprint sensors and "no-notch" screens, both of which increase the usable screen size .

This translates into a double success for Apple: a reduced market share in a shrinking market. A recent government report indicates that smartphone shipments last month hit a six-year low.
