Chinese woman arrested at Trump Mar-a-Lago club denied bail

The Chinese judge accused of lying for having briefly bet last month in President Trump's Mar-a-Lago club was denied bail by a federal judge.

Yujing Zhang, appearing in a West Palm Beach court dressed in a blue jumpsuit with cuffs and ankles chained, also pleaded not guilty under federal charges of lying to federal agents and illegally entering.

Federal Judge William Matthewman finally refused to secure a bond to the 33-year-old woman, saying that there was an "extreme risk of flight" if she was released. The United States does not have an extradition treaty with China.

Matthewman pointed out that "it seems in court that Ms. Zhang was planning something harmful" – a reference to the various electronic devices she was accused of and that she had left in her hotel room . Zhang has not, however, been accused of espionage.

Zhang was arrested on March 30 after secret service agents announced that she had been admitted to Mar-a-Lago by mistakenly telling a checkpoint guardian that she was a member.

The agents say that she told an inside employee that she was there for a non-existent US-Chinese event.

Associated Press contributed to this report.
