A Chinese citizen living in Michigan was arrested on Saturday after trampling a nest of sea turtles in Miami, authorities said.

Yaqun Lu, 41, was seen with a wooden stick in her hand "hitting the sea turtle nest" while she walked barefoot, Miami Beach police said. The nest was in an area closed to the public by sticks, yellow tape and a "Do Not Disturb" sign, according to the Miami Herald.

Lu is a Chinese citizen who added an address to Hudsonville, Mich. The Chinese consulate in Houston has been informed of the arrest, the Herald reported.

Sea turtles are protected by federal law and Florida law prohibits harming them or their offspring. The nesting season runs from May 1 to October 31, according to the Miami Beach police.
