A shocking video captured the moment a worker at a despondent steel plant in China committed suicide by jumping into a blast furnace after apparently losing just over $ 9,000 on the stock market.

Wang Long, 34, an employee of Baogang Group in Baotou, Inner Monglia, is seen removing his helmet and safety gloves, placing them on the ground as he hesitates before jumping into the molten steel, the South China Morning Post reported.

“He just disappeared instantly,” a worker who saw the surveillance footage told the Xiaoxiang Morning Post.

The company said Wang disappeared on March 24 while he was at the facility overnight, prompting co-workers to search.

“We are deeply sorry for his death. We are proactively calming the emotions of his family and providing psychological counseling to our workers, ”the company said in a statement, according to the South China Morning Post.

The police ruled that Wang’s death was suicide.

His colleagues said he has been trading stocks and futures for a long time.

Police said he believed he committed suicide because he had a high debt after losing more than 60,000 yuan – about $ 9,130 - on the stock market.

Users of the Chinese social media platform Weibo have expressed their sadness over Wang’s death.

“Like a leek [a term for individual stock investors in China] like him, I sympathize with him, ”said one person.

Another wrote: “Life is precious. What a pity he lost his life at such a young age!

In April 2020, a 47-year-old man also committed suicide in China for similar reasons by jumping from a high-rise building at a hospital in Putian City, the outlet reported.

He had lost more than one million yuan – $ 152,000 – on the stock market, officials said.
