“Fixer Upper” stars Chip and Joanna Gaines have become household names with successful television careers, but managing fame hasn’t been easy, they reveal in a new interview.
The duo – who will launch their Magnolia network in July on Discovery + – sat down with Oprah Winfrey for a “Super Soul” chat that aired on the streaming platform on March 13.
In an excerpt from the interview, the talk show host presses the couple on how they’ve handled their success.
Noting that living in the public eye can be difficult, especially when so many people “know your name,” Winfrey wondered if Chip, 46, and Joanna, 42, “were grounded” before making themselves known in the world. whole world.

Gaines went on to say that it took him “a year or two” playing on “Fixer Upper” to “tackle what it was exactly that I was losing.”
He also touched on the couple’s decision to pull out of the old HGTV series that aired on the network from 2013 to 2018. They decided to end the show after five seasons, although the hit home improvement series will return. on their new cable network, Magnolia, with a revamped version called “Fixer Upper: Welcome Home”.
“That year I really think Jo and I were able to curl up and really try to find out what it was about being famous that seemed so incompatible with my personality,” he recalls.

The upcoming series will see the couple working together to renovate homes, which includes public shopping for Joanna – activity limited by security measures for nearly a year due to the coronavirus pandemic.
During Discovery + ‘s TCA panel last month, Joanna approached filming under such circumstances, including visiting flea markets to find antiques, a staple of her decorating style.

“With the pandemic, sellers have become so creative,” she said. “There are so many vendors who literally send their spell to me and say, ‘Hey, I have this and this and this,’ and that’s how I incorporate a lot of antiques that you’ll see on this news. series with ‘Fix Up: Welcome home. ‘”
Magnolia will also be playing shows with several other hosts including chef-restaurateur Erin French, Floret Farms owners Erin and Chris Benzakein, and more. The expanded society meant that Chip and Joanna had to legislate to keep them safe.

“Jo is in virtual therapy 24 hours a day for obvious reasons,” Chip Gaines joked. “… She refers to me as triplets. So she was married to a triplet and then had five children. But I will say that we believe in mental health and we take care of you in that sense.”
The couple share five children: Drake, 16; Ella, 14 years old; Duke, 12 years old; Emmie, 11 years old; and crew, 2.
