Chloë Grace Moretz Interview: Greta

Screen Rant: Between Frances' relationship with Greta and Erica and the specter of her mother, there are so many women at the center of this story. How did you experience these different feminine dynamics?

Chloë Grace Moretz: It was really important. You know, I think I'm able to turn the genre around and get Anthony Hopkins to be Isabelle Huppert and boyfriend Maika Monroe, my best friend. I think I can show the different layers of – the feminine complexity of relationships and friendships between them. Also, the theme of motherhood throughout the film, and grief and loss and loneliness, I think these are interesting things to be able to represent between three women as opposed to what tropes would normally be like and especially from this film.

Chloë Grace Moretz: Well, we really wanted to take advantage of it. This blurry line in the movie, we did not really want to know where that was going or what was going to happen in their relationship. We knew we wanted it to be a palpable and almost star-studded friendly encounter, and how fast and what kind of scorching. And then I really wanted to show the moment she opened the closet and found the bags. I wanted it to be more heartbreaking than fear itself. And even when I looked at the face of evil, I wanted it to come from a place of sadness and sorrow, that a person who cared so much for her had become that monster before her eyes. And I think doing it all the way through the movie and using it as your underlying has really helped to make the macabre fairy tale that you see described in the story gravitate.

Chloë Grace Moretz: Absolutely. Maika is a close friend. We have known each other for years and we were completely united during the filming of this film. So it was wonderful. Neil, as a wonderful director, he allowed us to really take the reins of our friendship in history and dictate how we would talk to you, you see? I think it's important because we are in fact age and women compared to him an adult man.
