Riz Ahmed and Frances McDormand were among the interim award winners on Sunday.
Toronto Film Critics Association named Chloe Zhao’s Nomadland as its best picture of 2020 as the American road movie continued its run as a contender at the start of awards season.
On Sunday, Zhao won the award for best director for Nomadland, which also earned Frances McDormand the Best Actress trophy for her role in the film, while Riz Ahmed won a Best Actor victory for her performances in Metal sound.
Elsewhere in the acting categories, Daniel Kaluuya was voted Best Supporting Actor for his role as Black Panther Chairman Fred Hampton in Warner Bros. ‘ Judas and the Black Messiah, while Maria Bakalova won the crown for Best Supporting Actress for her performance in Next Borat movie, alongside Sacha Baron Cohen.
Wolfwalkers, the latest installment of Tomm Moore’s Irish folk trilogy to air on AppleTV +, was named by Toronto critics as Best Animated Feature, and Bacurau, director Kleber Mendonca Filho’s neo-western folk tale was voted best foreign language film.
Other winners include Black bodies director of short films Kelly Fyffe-Marshall as best emerging artist; Alexander Nanau Collective, a film about hospital corruption following a nightclub fire, named best documentary of 2020; Radha Blank’s The 40-year-old version, with Lena Waithe as producer, winner of the best first feature film; and Best Screenplay for Lee Isaac Chung’s Comedy-Drama Under the threat.
Toronto critics tweeted the winners and finalists live via their official #TFCAawards Twitter account. This year’s pandemic era vote included theatrical and streaming films slated for release until March 31, 2021.
