He was also known to have worked with Australian country music group The Buckleys.

Chris Murphy, the Australian entrepreneur who ran rock band INXS, has passed away. He was 66 years old.

“It is with great sadness that Caroline Murphy and her family confirm that Christopher (CM) Mark Murphy, President of Murphy Petrol Group, passed away peacefully today at his beloved Ballina ‘Sugar Beach Ranch’ property surrounded by his family, “wrote Murphy Petrol Group in a statement obtained by The Hollywood Reporter.

Although no cause of death was provided, the statement indicated that Murphy had battled mantle cell lymphoma.

“CM celebrated an illustrious career spanning more than 40 years and had an incredible impact on the global music and entertainment industry,” the statement continued. “Best known for making his ‘group of brothers’ INXS a global celebrity, CM Murphy has influenced the lives of many around the world with his endless passion and drive. He will be sorely missed.

Led by the late Michael Hutchence, INXS were one of Australia’s top performing bands in the late 1970s and sold around 70 million records worldwide during their career.

The surviving band members wrote in tribute to Murphy, “Without Chris’ vision, passion and hard work, the story of INXS would be totally different. Chris’s star burned very hard and we celebrate a life well lived and send all our love to his family. Garry, Andrew, Tim, Jon and Kirk. “

Murphy was also known to have worked with Australian country group The Buckleys – made up of siblings Sarah, Lachlan and Molly Buckley – who remembered Murphy’s “strength”.

“Chris has been our Guardian Angel since the day we met him and he will continue to be so for the rest of our lives,” they wrote in a joint tribute. “As with everyone who was lucky enough to have known him, the strength, passion, guidance and love he ignites are eternal. We are so grateful to have walked this land with him, our best friend, our greatest champion and mentor. His spirit and the light will live forever in us and around us. “

In addition to his musical pursuits, Murphy is remembered for his “competitive spirit” and his love of agriculture, surfing, rugby, carrier pigeons and horse breeding.

He is survived by his wife Caroline and his children Stevey, Jeri, Jack, Louis and Charlie; and her grandchildren Asher, Samantha, Bella, Axel, Harley and Reuben; her mother Janice and her sisters Charne and Tanya.

In lieu of flowers, the family is asking that the trees be gifted to contribute to a memorial on Murphy’s property in Ballina, NSW.
