Chris Pratt pleads with Chris Hemsworth to stop training

Chris Pratt comments on the workout photo of Thor 4 co-star Chris Hemsworth, jokingly asking him to tone it down lest he make Pratt look.

Thor: love and thunder Star Chris Hemsworth posted an intense workout photo to Instagram earlier this week, and now co-star Chris Pratt has responded, asking Hemsworth to call her back. Pratt plays Peter Quill, aka Star-Lord, leader of the Guardians of the Galaxy, in the MCU. Star-Lord has been confirmed to appear in Thor 4, although it is not known how large its role will be. The last time we saw Thor and Star-Lord on screen Avengers: Endgame, they were aboard the Benatar spacecraft, bickering over who would pilot the vehicle.

Not much is known about the plot of Thor: love and thunder again, but if it resumes soon after the events of End of Game, it makes sense that Thor and Star-Lord are together. But one exciting thing we know for sure is that Natalie Portman will return to the franchise as Dr. Jane Foster – and she’ll end up wielding Mjölnir when she becomes Mighty Thor. Portman last appeared in 2013 Thor: The Dark World, which had a lukewarm reception. It looked like Portman was done with the MCU after this movie, so the announcement of his return to San Diego Comic-Con 2019 came as a huge surprise. Now Portman is training for his role in Love and thunder, and she says the workouts have been very tiring.

Judging from the photo Hemsworth posted on Instagram, it looks like his workouts are just as tough. He did not specifically mention in his post that he was training for Thor 4 but that seems fairly likely, given that filming is set to begin in January 2021. The photo, which shows Hemsworth flipping something he calls a “very large donut” but is actually a giant foam tire who probably weighs between 175 and 220 pounds, is truly intimidating, even for his co-star Pratt. Pratt commented on the image, writing:

“Hey buddy. I just heard from my trainer and he needs you to stop training since we’re gonna be in the same movie and all he doesn’t want me to stay next to you though you look like that so i’m gonna need you to put on 25 really cool pounds, thanks. “

The tongue-in-cheek response is in keeping with Pratt’s image as a once chubby dude who got ripped apart for his role in guardians of the galaxy. Pratt lost over 70 pounds for the role, but that didn’t stop Rocket (Bradley Cooper) from calling Quill “a sandwich away from fat” in Avengers: Infinity War. During this scene, Drax (Dave Bautista) and Rocket compare Quill’s physique to Thor’s, telling Quill that Thor is much more muscular than he is. Apparently this injury has yet to heal, and Pratt jokingly worries about another comparison in Thor 4.

It’s a fun exchange between the two actors, but it does raise an issue that many people have pointed out when Infinity war first released: In the movie, Quill is clearly in very good shape and doesn’t deserve the ribs of Drax and Rocket. Associated to End of Game making a joke about Thor’s weight gain, the MCU doesn’t have the best record when it comes to body positivity. guardians of the galaxy director James Gunn, at least at one point, had a different take on things; in 2014, Gunn said: “I loved [Pratt’s] the performance so much so that even though he was still chubby, I knew we had to go; it would just have to be a new take on a superhero that was a little heavier… because his characterization was so great.“That kind of acceptance is a refreshing change of pace, especially for a superhero movie. Pratt’s self-deprecating commentary is an easy joke to make but, hopefully, Thor: love and thunder will maintain that sense of humor without demeaning anyone.
