Chris Sale will be activated and debut for the Red Sox this Saturday, according to Alex Speier of the Boston Globe. It will mark the end of a long absence for Sale, who has been out of action for two years now.
In August 2019, Sale started having elbow issues that forced him to miss the rest of the season. Although Tommy John’s surgery was not recommended at the time, it eventually would be, and Sale underwent the procedure in March 2020.
If he can quickly return to his previous form, or something close, that will be a huge improvement for a Red Sox side that recently slipped in the standings, relinquishing the top spot in AL East to the Rays. The southpaw has been one of baseball’s best pitchers for the past decade. Since his debut in 2010, he’s pitched 1,629 2/3 innings, with a 3.03 ERA and excellent strikeout and goal rates of 30.7% and 5.7%.
In other Red Sox news, Alex Verdugo is registered on the paternity list and will be absent from the team for a few days, by Bill Koch of Providence Journal. Chris Cotillo of MassLive adds this Connor wong has been made optional, while Jarren Duran and JD Martinez were activated from COVID-IL. Duran and Martinez have both been to IL for the past few days because they weren’t feeling well. The COVID tests must have come back negative, as a positive test would have resulted in a 10-day quarantine. Wong was just called back to help cover their absence, but was not involved in any game action.
