Chrissy Teigen and John Legend have given their first interview together since losing their pregnancy.
Less than two months after Lip sync battle host and cookbook author, 34, lost her pregnancy at 20 weeks – a little boy she and the 41-year-old singer were to name Jack – they opened up to Hello america about their “utter and utter grief” and how that made them stronger as a couple. They also spoke about the criticism they faced after sharing photos documenting their pain.
“I’m definitely giving myself permission to have complete, utter grief,” Teigen said. “Every day is so different. So when people ask me how I’m doing, I always say I’m fine – today.”
The legend praised his wife for being “brave enough” to share their loss with the world – as she experienced in the hospital and in the private photos they shared after showing them goodbye to Jack.
Teigen said she had “thousands of letters” sent to her after the loss. “Obviously, it’s so painful to go through something like that as a woman – something that was inside of your body, you nurture and take care of yourself. But obviously there is a dad involved and the support for both of us has been so beautiful, so amazing.
As for those photos, which she wrote about in an essay, “I don’t care if you’re offended or disgusted. I understand that it can be so for people. It was designed for people in pain. “
The caption admitted he was apprehensive about taking the photos, saying he didn’t want to “commemorate” the pain. However, the “thing about miscarriage is you don’t walk away with anything. You have this void and we wanted to take pictures to have something to remember.
And the “outpouring of love” they received, Legend said, drowned out any negativity.
“The world is inherently good,” Teigen said. “As difficult as it was, it’s beautiful to see from that side.”
Legend has it that he loves Teigen – with whom he shares Luna, 4, and Miles, 2 – “more than ever. We’ve been through so many challenges together and they’ve made us stronger, and I know that doesn’t always happen when people go through tragedy. But I have a feeling that the challenges we face together have made us feel even more confident about who we are together as a couple and who we are as a family … We are stronger together than we never have been.
The couple also spoke of partnering with Ronald McDonald House Charities to help give back to other families with seriously ill or injured children.
Teigen didn’t reveal what was behind his post this weekend about just having had the “hardest 4 days of my life” (below). However, it has been a difficult few months – first with the complications of the pregnancy, then the loss of pregnancy, mourning the baby with their two children and receiving the baby’s ashes, which Teigen said they were planning to put ” in the ground of a tree in our new home, the one we [bought] with his bedroom in mind. “
