She might be a superstar now, but Chrissy Teigen is still the same refreshingly honest and disarming woman who shared hilarious stories and mouth-watering recipes via her food blog, So Delushious, so many years ago.
As outspoken about his imperfections and insecurities as he is about the ups and downs of fame, parenthood, and everything in between, Teigen – who has turned his Cravings business into a mini-empire in recent years. years – deserves more than the cover of This Year, The Beautiful Issue.
A mother to daughter Luna, 4, and son Miles, 2, along with husband John Legend, 42, cookbook author, 35, are now teaching her children to be exactly who they are.

“I am an open and free spirit and I love that children are children. For us, kindness is such a big thing. When you meet our kids they are very warm and friendly, ”she tells PEOPLE in this week’s cover story. . “You instill these things in them, but let them for the most part be creative and wonderful and spiritual and curious.”
Born in Utah and raised in Snohomish, Washington, and Huntington Beach, Calif., Teigen says her Thai mother, Vilailuck “Pepper” Teigen, also encouraged her to experience life on her own.
“My mom never once said, ‘You probably shouldn’t be using Sharpie on your eyebrows,’” she laughs. “She just let me do it – and I learned! With the kids, you let them discover what they love. John and I are both very relaxed and eager to learn together.”
While working as a model in her late teens and early twenties, Teigen – who was discovered by a photographer in a surf shop while working in retail – says she was counting often calories and stuck to various diets.

But now, “It is more important for me to enjoy things as they come. I put my mind and spirit on the body. If it makes me happy and makes me feel good, then I let me go, ”says the Safely co-founder. “I’ve spent too many years counting calories and scheduling way too many workouts and trying to figure out what my term wellness meant to me. Now I know it’s on the ground playing with my kids or going to a park or aquarium. “
With her growing business (and a restaurant on the way!), Teigen feels more fulfilled than ever in her career.
“I always knew I wanted to be a mom and a wife, but in terms of work, I didn’t know exactly where I was or what I could do,” she says. “I am very proud to have brought together all these talented people, and the amount of love and comments [we’ve gotten] with Cravings makes me so happy. “
After meeting on the set of Legend 2006’s “Stereo” music video, Teigen quickly fell in love with her future husband. The couple tied the knot in a fairytale Lake Como wedding seven years later and had the happiest – and devastating – moments of life together.

“I thought I knew all about John, then [we] had children. Seeing him take care of them is wonderful, ”she said. Seeing my partner being a father is really wonderful. “
Last year, the couple faced the unimaginable when they lost their son, Jack, at 20 weeks pregnant. Sharing their grief publicly, the stars have helped others with similar loss feel less alone.
“I learned how strong a body can be physically and mentally. I learned how strong I am. This year has been a roller coaster for everyone, including our little family, ”she says.
“Seeing the people gathering around us has been truly wonderful. There have been things over the past year that I never thought John would have to see, but it’s also so wonderful that we prevailed and that we still saw each other with so much more love than we could ever, ever imagine in our lives, ”adds Teigen.“ Whatever love we put into the world 10 years ago, we have it. let’s recover ten times. I feel every bit of love from everyone across the world. “
Thinking about her future, Teigen says she looks forward to growing old with Legend – and being surrounded by loved ones for the rest of their lives together.
“I can’t wait to see John and I salt and pepper next to him with my silver hair.” I really can’t wait for our kids to hopefully be the kind of kids who come every weekend for Sunday dinner, ”she says. “It would be incredibly meaningful to me. I will be so happy to see my family around the same table.”
