CHARLOTTE, NC – Carolina Panthers running back Christian McCaffrey could be sidelined again after sustaining a right shoulder injury at the end of Sunday’s 33-31 loss to the Chiefs of Kansas City.

“Right now he’s listed as a daily,” coach Matt Rhule said on Monday as he began to prepare for Tampa Bay.

Rhule refused to expand, citing McCaffrey’s privacy.

The injury came 1:10 to go when goaltender Daniel Sorensen slammed McCaffrey to the ground near the touchline after a one-yard catch. McCaffrey immediately left the game and the team’s coaches began to check the shoulder.

McCaffrey returned for another game with nine seconds left, but was not released to the media afterwards as he underwent treatment. He was due to undergo shoulder tests on Monday morning.

Sunday was the NFL’s first-highest-paid backstroke game after missing six in a row with a high ankle sprain suffered in a Week 2 loss at Tampa Bay.

McCaffrey made his presence felt with 69 yards and one touchdown on 18 carries and 82 yards and one touchdown in 10 catches. He played 71% of the shots, with Mike Davis his replacement the previous six weeks, getting 31%.

McCaffrey provided a boost in the red zone, where Carolina (3-6) struggled. The Panthers were 4 for 4 in touchdowns inside the Kansas City 20 to jump to 8 for 9 this season with McCaffrey in the lineup.

The Panthers are 10 for 21 in touchdowns in the red zone without the eighth pick in the 2017 draft.

McCaffrey hasn’t missed a game in his first three seasons, including last season, when he became the third player in NFL history to have 1,000 rushing and receiving yards in the same season.

He is now at risk of missing his seventh game since signing a four-year $ 64 million extension, averaging $ 16 million a year.

The Panthers are 0-3 this season with McCaffrey and have lost 11 in a row to him since last season.
